New York Getting Closer to Legalizing Online Poker

2 Apr 2014

In order to keep up with states that already legalized some form of online gambling, New York regulators are starting to think about allowing residents to play at internet casinos in the state. Operators who want to find out how to open an online casino in the US should know that a new bill could allow online poker in New York.

The proposal came from one of the most influential lawmakers, Republican Senator John Bonacic, who wants to allow online poker games in New York.  Bonacic explained that it would take some time for the bill pass, but he will start pushing for internet gambling in the near future.

Operators who want to find out how to open an online casino should know that if the bill will be passed into law, New York would allow 10 companies to provide online poker games for New York residents. All players would be required to be at least 21 years old, and the operators would have to deliver information on how they intend to prevent problem gambling. License applicants would have to pay a $10 million fee for a license, and when the casino is up and running, a 15 percent tax on gross gaming revenues would be requested by the state.

Despite the fact that no other casino games but poker would be allowed at first, Bonacic explained that Texas Hold’Em and other poker variations could be legal in New York starting next year. Bonacic also said that the bill would probably not pass into law this year, and that he wants to see what kind of impact the four land-based casinos, approved by voters, will have on the New York’s gaming industry. The Senator commented that he does not intend to push the bill this year, but he will start discussing with lawmakers about legalizing online poker games.

Entrepreneurs who are looking for information on how to open an online casino in the US should know that New Jersey, Nevada and Delaware already legalized some form of online gambling games for their residents. Gaming insiders consider that the online gaming industry in the US would successfully contribute in terms of jobs and taxes.
