The Netherlands Will Liberalize Online Gambling by 2015
Dutch representatives are claiming that the internet gaming industry will be opened to competition by 2015. This will mean that the monopoly of the sole casino in the European country will come to an end. The draft bill has been brought forward on April 22, 2013. At this moment, gambling companies from other countries are not legally allowed to target Dutch individuals, but this ban has usually been ignored.
Fred Teeven, junior justice minister, claimed that companies which will want to apply for a license that will allow them to offer casino games including poker and sports betting games will have to follow a series of strict rules. A tax rate of 20 percent will be applied on operators’ gross gaming revenues. This tax is significantly lower than the one applied to land based businesses in the state, which is currently set at 29 percent.
The smaller online gambling tax rate has been set this way so that it will encourage new operators to start their businesses in the Netherlands. This draft legislation is said to have been put out to consultation until the end of July 2013, when it will brought forward to parliament representatives.
