Spain Online Gambling Up in First Quarter of 2014
The Spanish regulatory authority for internet gambling, Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ), has recently declared that gross gaming revenue in the country has increased by 9.2 percent during the first quarter of 2014, compared to the same period of time last year.
Both online operators and backend casino software providers will benefit from these results, as the popularity of online gaming in Spain is rising. Spokespeople for DGOJ said that internet gaming has generated these results thanks to an increase in the popularity of sports betting activities. It has also been reported that online gaming in Spain has generated gross gaming revenue of €67.9 million, with a 9.2 percent increase on the results of the same period of time in 2013.
Online casino operators and backend casino software providers who offer services to the Spanish gambling industry should know that online players gambled most of the money on sports bets. The sports betting industry raked in gross gaming revenue of €37.6 million, which represents 55.4 percent of the entire gaming revenue in Spain. More than that, punters have spent €642.7 million solely on sports bets.
Backend casino software providers and online casino operators should know that Spanish online players have gambled a whopping €1.6 billion during the first quarter. Compared to the results of last year, an increase of 16.1 percent has been reported year-on-year. It seems like the most profitable month for the online casino industry in Spain was January, when punters wagered no less than €540.2 million.
The DGOJ also said that online poker was the second most popular form of gambling in Spain, while other casino games occupied the third place on the list. On the other hand, bingo games and contests were not as popular in the country, having generated around 3 percent of gaming revenue.
