Taiwan Regulators Want to Introduce Mainland Casinos

Lawmakers of Taiwan are looking forward to making modifications in the gambling regulation system, meaning that the Criminal Code will be revised which will permit the construction of new land-based casinos in several proposed zones, which will be called the ‘Free Economic Pilot Zones’, where a more permissive regulatory system will be applied.
The Criminal Code currently prevents businessmen from opening land-based casinos in the state, even though offshore gambling establishments are allowed, several casinos being currently operational in the nearby islands. Several lawmakers from the city of New Taipei and also from Taichung claimed that it would be beneficial to open new gambling establishments, but at this time there is no certainty that the plans will be fulfilled.
The Taiwanese regulators also made an agreement to introduce a new tax on casino revenues which would have taken 20 percent of operators’ winnings in the first twenty years after the new gambling establishments would be opened. Several Taipei authorities made objections regarding this idea and decided that only 13 percent of the gross gambling revenues are going to be taxed, as it encourages operators to continue their businesses.
