Vietnam Plans to Offer Gambling to Residents

Vietnamese regulators are taking into consideration opening up to the gaming and betting industry for residents of the state, in an attempt to get ahead of the competition caused by neighboring states which already offer gambling games and attract customers from Vietnam who travel abroad to play at these establishments. Regulators have recently met in order to discuss draft regulations on gambling activities.
The government plans to develop a new project which will include the development of a new resort with casinos and betting parlors near the region of Halong Bay, which attracts millions of tourists every year. Vietnam already offers casino and betting games to foreign visitors inside 50 gambling establishments, despite the fact that these casinos are forbidden to Vietnamese citizens. At this point in time, operators who run such games and allow Vietnamese citizens to take part in these activities can be fined with 200 million dong ($9,500). The new rules will not be applied until the National Assembly approves them, officials saying that they still have to prospect the foreign market in order to develop a solution which will best suit Vietnam.
